noun USMost dictionaries stop at the definition. Dictionary Genie carries the entry through to the part you actually needed: saying it out loud, seeing it used, and finding the word you meant instead.
Everyday words carry three notations of the same sound: IPA, a familiar respelling built from the word’s own letters, and a sound-first respelling that spells the sounds. Stress is marked, syllables are split, and US and UK are separate where the dictionary holds both. Play it, or play it slowly. 75,811 headwords have a pronunciation, among them 1,998 of the 2,000 commonest English words; rare words and most multiword phrases show their definition without one.
223,768 headwords and 437,666 senses, grouped by part of speech, with synonyms, antonyms and related words hanging off the sense they belong to rather than the word as a whole. Compare two to four synonyms side by side to see what actually separates them. Depth follows how common a word is: of the 10,000 most frequent words, 88% carry examples and 84% carry thesaurus links, while the rarest words and many phrase entries — about a third of the dictionary — are a definition on their own.
Word translations into 22 languages come from the dictionary itself, with grammatical gender and transliteration where the source has them, plus 265,723 human-written bilingual sentences. Like the examples, translations are densest on common and mid-frequency words. Whole sentences are translated on device by Apple’s Translation framework.
A Word of the Day, and a Phrase of the Day in Latin, Spanish, French, Italian or German — whichever you choose in Settings, 366 sayings a year in each, with a respelling you can say aloud, literal and idiomatic translations, the cultural context and a modern example. There is an archive you can browse back through, a streak that never scolds you, and an optional reminder at a time you choose.
Favorite any word or sentence translation, file words into lists, and add your own notes. Recent searches and translations stay on the device and can be paused, deleted one at a time, or cleared entirely.
Word of the Day on the Home Screen and Lock Screen, a medium widget that shows the word and the phrase together, a configurable saved-list review widget, and a “Look up a word” App Shortcut.
There is no server behind Dictionary Genie. The dictionary ships inside the app, every lookup happens on your device, and nothing leaves it. This is not a setting you have to find — it is the only way the app is built.
Dictionary Genie is assembled entirely from openly licensed lexical data: Wiktionary, Open English WordNet, the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, Tatoeba and wordfreq. Nothing is written by a language model, and nothing is copied from a commercial dictionary.
Every definition, example, pronunciation and translation in the app carries the identifier of the dataset it came from, and the app shows you that attribution on the entry itself.
Wiktionary is share-alike licensed, so the dictionary data derived from it is offered back under the same terms. The build manifest describing exactly what shipped is published alongside each release.
