What’s inside

A reference that answers the whole question

Most dictionaries stop at the definition. Dictionary Genie carries the entry through to the part you actually needed: saying it out loud, seeing it used, and finding the word you meant instead.

01

Pronunciation you can read

Three notations for every pronunciation: IPA, a familiar respelling built from the word’s own letters, and a sound-first respelling that spells the sounds. Stress is marked, syllables are split, US and UK are separate. Play it, or play it slowly.

02

Definitions, examples and thesaurus — connected

Senses are grouped by part of speech, and synonyms, antonyms and related words hang off the sense they belong to rather than the word as a whole. Compare two to four synonyms side by side to see what actually separates them.

03

Translate words in context

Word translations into 22 languages come from the dictionary itself, with grammatical gender and transliteration where the source has them. Whole sentences are translated on device by Apple’s Translation framework.

04

A new word and phrase every day

A Word of the Day and a Latin Phrase of the Day, with an archive you can browse back through, a streak that never scolds you, and an optional reminder at a time you choose.

05

Save words and build vocabulary

Favorite anything, file words into lists, and add your own notes. Recent searches stay on the device and can be paused, deleted one at a time, or cleared entirely.

06

Widgets, Spotlight and Shortcuts

Word of the Day on the Home Screen and Lock Screen, a medium widget that shows the word and the phrase together, a configurable saved-list review widget, and a “Look up a word” App Shortcut.

Privacy

Built to know nothing about you

There is no server behind Dictionary Genie. The dictionary ships inside the app, every lookup happens on your device, and nothing leaves it. This is not a setting you have to find — it is the only way the app is built.

Provenance

Every line has a source

Dictionary Genie is assembled entirely from openly licensed lexical data: Wiktionary, Open English WordNet, the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, Tatoeba and wordfreq. Nothing is written by a language model, and nothing is copied from a commercial dictionary.

Every definition, example, pronunciation and translation in the app carries the identifier of the dataset it came from, and the app shows you that attribution on the entry itself.

CC BY-SA 4.0

Wiktionary is share-alike licensed, so the dictionary data derived from it is offered back under the same terms. The build manifest describing exactly what shipped is published alongside each release.

How to get the derived data

Ready when you are

Free, offline, and quiet about you. Dictionary Genie requires iOS 18 or later.

The App Store listing goes live with version 1.0. Until then this link may not resolve.
